What first started as a hobby and sharing my experiences, quickly turned into something that I wanted to create a business around.
The thought of sharing my passions AND making money had me jumping up and down with excitement.
Now I just had to figure out how to do it.
As I researched, watched countless YouTube videos, and read an absurd amount of blogs, I learned that affiliate links are an easy way, even for beginners, to make an income.
2 months in I signed up for Amazon Associates (because it’s so well known and recommended) and I couldn’t believe it. Within the first month I made my first earnings!
And then I had another earning. And another!
It wasn’t much. I’m talking CHANGE here.
But it was enough to get me inspired.
I realized that making money from blogging was a reality!
So how do affiliate links work and how can YOU incorporate them into your blog?
I’m going to show you in this blog post!
It doesn’t matter what your niche is or how long you’ve been blogging, you can start earning commissions on Amazon affiliate links in no time!
WHAT ARE AFFILIATE LINKS?
Affiliate links are a special URL that tracks users when they click on it. If a purchase is made, usually the person with the special URL makes a commission.
Essentially, you are getting paid because you are leading people to a particular website where they are making a purchase.
For example, if I am promoting a product, service, or program from Amazon on my blog and have an affiliate link to that product, service, or program, anytime someone clicks on the link and makes a purchase, I make a commission because I’m the one who sent them to Amazon.
Anytime I promote a product, service, or program I try to see if they have an affiliate program knowing that I could earn a commission if my readers make a purchase.
I’m always surprised at how many business do have an affiliate program! It’s always worth looking in to! It’s as simple as doing a quick Google search saying “affiliate program for _______________”.
WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT THE AMAZON ASSOCIATES PROGRAM?
The Amazon associates program is so popular and recommended by many for 3 primary reasons:
1. Easy To Get Accepted Into Amazon Associates Program
To be accepted into the Amazon associates program, you must make 3 qualified sales in the first 180 days of signing up. After this, the Amazon team will review you’re application and decide if you are eligible. This means you don’t need crazy high traffic numbers or to be well established, it’s a great option for even beginner bloggers. If you are creating content and sending people to your website, you are likely to get clicks and potential purchases.
2. Amazon Is Familiar With People Around the World
People from all over the world are familiar with Amazon. This is helpful when you are promoting products and providing links for people to make a purchase. Most people are comfortable purchasing with Amazon so when you promote a product, they can buy with confidence.
3. Amazon Has A Wide Variety Of Products
Some affiliate programs are feature a specific product and that’s it. Amazon has a wide variety of products that people blogging in any niche can promote. Makeup, tools, clothings, books, and so much more Amazon has something for everyone. Also, the earnings aren’t limited to just the product you’re promoting. If someone uses your Amazon affiliate link to view a product and remembers they wanted to purchase something totally different and do (within 24 hours of using your link) you get credit for that.
DOWNSIDES OF THE AMAZON ASSOCIATES PROGRAM
Of course, there are also downsides of the Amazon associates program.
1. Amazon Associates Has Low Commission Rates
The commission rates on Amazon products are between 1%-10%. This isn’t much and means you need to have a lot of traffic visiting your blog and website or focus on promoting products with a high return to make significant earnings.
2. People Only Have 24 Hours To Make A Purchase With Your Amazon Affiliate Link
Once someone clicks on your link, they have 24 hours to make a purchase and for Amazon to credit you with sending them there. This isn’t much time, but if you’re providing the answers and products your readers are looking for, they are more likely to make a purchase.
3. Amazon Decides Who Friends And Family Are
Sales made to friends and family don’t count toward your earnings. And Amazon has its own way of determining who friends and family are. I’ve heard of people trying to dispute this with no luck. But again, ad you continue to create content and promote your work, you’re going to e driving organic traffic to your blog and website.
5 AMAZON AFFILIATE BLOG POST IDEAS
Are you ready to see what you came here for?
Remember, these blog posts can be used for any niche. Adapt them to fit your blog niche and you’ll increase your earnings in no time!
1. RECOMMENDED BOOK LIST WITH AFFILIATE LINKS
Yep, we’re starting with a good ole book list to kick things off.
Write a blog post on your recommended books, include a short summary of why you chose it, and include an affiliate link with each recommendation.
Keep in mind this doesn’t have to be one and done. You can do a variety of different posts that include books. Here are a few examples:
- 5 favorite books of all time
- Top 3 recommended books on (specific topic of your niche)
- Top 4 books recommended for (different topic from your niche)
- Book list for this year
- Summary of books read last year
A book list is an easy way to provide resources and recommendations for your audience. You can see an example of how I wrote a book list blog post on my lifestyle blog.
2. HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDES THAT INCLUDES AFFILIATE LINKS
Holiday gift guides are great for seasonal blog posts. You can create a gift guide or “must have” blog post for any holiday, including birthdays!
Every year you can publish new blog posts with the latest recommendations. Some products might be repeats, but that’s ok. You’re audience will know you love and believe in the product!
Get creative with this. Here are a few examples:
- Ultimate gift guide for runners
- Valentine gift ideas for a baker
- Best birthday gifts for the traveler in your life
One Christmas, I wrote a blog post called 21 Gift Ideas For The Ultimate Adventurer. It was written for people looking for specific gift ideas for someone who travels.
The next year I wrote a post called 20 Gift Ideas For Him and Her. It was 10 gift ideas that I recommended and 10 gift ideas that Scott recommended. There was no theme, just 10 things we both love and use often. This was for people looking for fun and different ideas.
Both years I did a Christmas guide but both years were completely different and targeted a different audience.
Provide your audience with a list of different products they can purchase for different seasons in their lives. Write out a simple list include affiliate links or dive in to each product with a small paragraph explaining more.
Either way, continue to provide value for your audience!
3. SUGGEST THE PERFECT “TOOLKIT”
Choose different topics related to your niche and create multiple blog posts recommending different products.
Again, I’ll let you get creative with this but I want to show you more.
Say your blogging niche is running. That’s broad, but stick with me.
Write different blog posts related to the different topics of running. They will be similar but not the same.
- 5 must haves for a long run
- 8 things you need for your first marathon
- 10 of my favorite running accessories
- 3 of my favorite running shoes
- 6 things every runner needs
Do you see where I’m going with this? Those are just some examples but you can really get as creative as you want!
Here is a similar blog post I wrote on my lifestyle blog: 9 Things I ALWAYS Take When I Travel.
Include summaries and links of each product you’re recommending explaining the pros and cons or why you chose them.
4. MY FAVORITES NOW BLOG POST
Provide a list of products and recommendations that you are loving in this season of life
- 3 things you’re loving this month
- 7 kitchen accessories everyone needs for fall
- 4 bathroom items that changed your month
- 5 surprising purchases you recently made (and love!)
Keep this one simple, but you can do it often. It was one of my most surprisingly successful blog posts.
Tell people where you are now in life, what you’re loving, and what you would recommend for them. Include links and any suggestions or experience you have to offer. Your readers want to hear from YOU!
5. PRODUCT REVIEWS WITH AMAZON AFFILIATE LINKS
Write entire blog posts reviewing a single product. Write your honest review with examples, pros, cons, the good and bad, anything at all you would want your readers to know.
Use the lists from the other blog posts you’ve already published to give you ideas on products to review. Say you do a blog post on 5 things every runner should have. You could then write 5 blog posts diving into each individual product and reviewing it.
Include affiliate links for the product you’re recommending as well as interlinking within your website.
Interlinking is linking to other blog posts you have written within your blog. This is great for SEO and getting your readers to check out more of your content.
Here is a blog post I wrote specifically about packing cubes and why I love them so much. I include them in almost all of my travel recommendations because I believe in them that much and wanted to write a whole blog post dedicated to them so I could send readers there to dive deeper.
BONUS TIP: CREATE A PAGE ON YOUR WEBSITE WITH RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS
Create a favorites section, resource page, or Products you love area on your website. This can be an entire page on your website dedicated to products you suggest. Have it easily accessible in your navigation bar or highlighted on your home page!
Include products you love, products you recommend for your specific niche, programs and services that you actually use.
You could break it into different sections, have different topics, or include everything together.
However you want to work it.
It’s a great way to have consistent affiliate links on your page and an easy way for people to see what you’re all about. The list might be small to begiin with, but as you think of more products you can add them on!
As you continue to grow your blog, you’ll get more traffic and more people inevitably clicking on your links.
